The year 2015 is coming to a close. It’s a time for reflection, a time for change, a time for soup. Soup you ask? And we at Atwater’s say yes, soup! It’s that time of year when Hoppin’ John and Skippin’ Jenny make their annual menu appearance. If you’ve never heard about this soup before, you’re in for a real treat. You’re also in for a way better 2016! No good year starts without a bowl of piping hot Hoppin’ John. What is Hoppin’ John? Let us explain.
Hoppin’ John is a traditional southern dish eaten on New Year’s Day to help ring in a prosperous new year. Since Atwater’s is closed on New Year’s Day, we offer it December 30th and 31st . Twice as many opportunities to bring prosperity to your new year. The traditional symbolic ingredients are; black eyed peas, greens, and rice. The black eyed peas are for wisdom, the greens are for wealth and prosperity, and the rice is for strength and stamina for the whole year.
Skippin’ Jenny is the counterpart of Hoppin’ John. Skippin’ Jenny (leftover Hoppin’ John) is to be eaten after New Year’s Day to symbolize frugality. Waste not want not! We will have it on our menus January 2nd and 3rd.
